For those who are out on the water near the Erie bayfront attempting to catch the Lake Erie alligator, Jayson Olsen from Siren’s Nest of Exotic Rescue has some advice: Leave the task to the professionals.
Olsen, 38, was out on Lake Erie around the foot of East Avenue where the alleged alligator was initially spotted. His journey began early Wednesday morning. Since then he has encountered individuals who are also seeking the alligator.
“Let the professionals handle this,” Olsen said. “If anything, call the (Erie-Western Pennsylvania) Port Authority or even the game warden or commission.”
Olsen, an animal trapper, learned about the sighting because of the Facebook post by Stina Roach, who initially spotted the reptile. Olsen said he is concerned if adults attempt to catch the alligator, it will flee.
Plan of action for catching the gator
Olsen said professionals are prepared with equipment and a plan for once the gator is captured.
“We have a thickened net that is used for larger fish,” Olsen said. “It’s about two and a half feet depth-wise. We have a hook if we need it and we have a claw and special gloves. We also have a couple of bins just in case, depending on the size.”
