On Thursday students at the University of Mississippi turned a pro-Palestine protest into a resonant chant of unity and national pride. The normally tranquil Quad of the university was the stage for a clash of voices following a protest by pro-Palestine activists, which aimed to criticize the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza.
The gathering, initially composed of about 50-60 protesters, escalated when over 200 counter-protesters converged on the scene. The counter-demonstrators, embodying a robust patriotic spirit, responded by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” overshadowing the pro-Palestine chants.
Amidst the chaotic scene, a new chant emerged: “We want Trump” as well.
According to the Clarion Ledger, the situation intensified with some counter-protesters reportedly throwing objects and vocally confronting the pro-Palestine group. Security concerns prompted the university to evacuate the pro-Palestine protesters from the campus, ensuring the safety of all involved.
