Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive U.S. Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump ordered her detail canceled.
Harris, who left office in January 2025, was entitled under federal law to six months of protection.
That period expired July 21. President Joe Biden had extended her protection by an additional year, but Trump reversed the order effective September 1.
The Letter
A letter obtained by CNN stated:
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
What Protection Loss Means
The change means Harris will lose 24-hour agent coverage as well as access to federal intelligence analysis of threats from online activity, emails, and social media.
Her Los Angeles residence will also no longer be secured by federal agents.
According to CNN, Harris’ aides worry that the end of protection will also cut off their access to federal threat warnings.
