A federal judge ruled that President Donald Trump acted illegally in federalizing parts of the California National Guard and ordered him to return control of the Guard to Gov. Gavin Newsom. Judge Charles Breyer stayed his order from taking effect until Friday afternoon to give the Trump administration time to appeal his decision, which it quickly did. Trump had federalized 4,000 National Guard troops and mobilized about 700 U.S. Marines to respond to protests in Los Angeles against federal immigration enforcement actions.
