Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh has officially entered the race for Mayor of Minneapolis, promising a sweeping left-wing overhaul of city policies in a campaign that is already drawing comparisons to New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
Fateh, 35, is a self-described democratic socialist and son of Somali immigrants. In a campaign launch video posted Sunday, he said Minneapolis is becoming increasingly unaffordable for working-class residents and pledged to implement a radical slate of policies to “fix” the issue.
“My name is Omar Fateh, and I’m running for Minneapolis Mayor because for working people, it’s getting harder to build our lives in this city we love,” Fateh wrote in his campaign announcement.
A Familiar Agenda — Higher Wages, Rent Freezes, ICE Resistance
Fateh’s proposals include:
Raising the minimum wage to $20/hour
Rent stabilization policies (effectively capping rent increases)
Non-cooperation with ICE and federal immigration enforcement
“Diversifying” public safety by diverting 911 calls away from police
