A memorandum of understanding between Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the State of Texas will grant the Texas National Guard permission to make immigration arrests, according to a report from Breitbart News.
The memorandum, which was authored by acting CBP Commissioner Peter Flores, has not yet been distributed to all Lonestar State border sectors. The new guidance will allow National Guard personnel to perform daily patrols and execute all duties of an immigration agent so long as they are accompanied by an immigration officer or CBP agent.
Once enacted, the policy will provide a much needed manpower boost as the Trump Administration attempts to ramp up mass deportations.
President Trump previously issued quotas that will require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other border officers to make anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400 arrests every day. The numbers are currently lagging, as ICE reported under 1,000 arrests in Saturday’s operations.
According to preliminary guidance under the memorandum of understanding, one border officer or CBP agent will be required for every four National Guardsmen, according to Breitbart News.
