Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) is facing criticism after tweeting about Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, a Guatemalan woman who delivered a stillborn baby while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody and was later deported.
Jayapal wrote on X, “A pregnant woman lost her baby after ICE refused to give her prenatal care,” calling the situation “very sad” and “tragic.”
She also shared an article detailing Monterroso-Lemus’s experience.
Jayapal, a vocal advocate for abortion rights who has publicly shared her own experience with abortion, came under fire from critics accusing her of hypocrisy.
Some pointed to her past statements calling abortion “health care” and a “human right” as contradictory to her expression of grief over a lost pregnancy.
The website Not the Bee responded, “If true, this is very sad. Tragic even. And the fact that it’s sad is clear evidence that your position on abortion is both inhumane and barbaric.”
Christian influencer Kangmin Lee also weighed in, writing, “Interesting that it’s a baby when you want to dunk on ICE, but it’s just a clump of cells when you want to kill it.”
