The populist deputy prime minister of one of Europe’s largest economies has suggested following in the footsteps of President Donald J. Trump and leading his country out of the World Health Organization (WHO). Italy’s deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, introduced the bill to withdraw Italy from WHO late Thursday.

“This morning, the League presented its bill to LEAVE the WHO (World Health Organization), as the United States did with Donald Trump,” Salvini wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He continued: “Italy no longer has to deal with a supranational power center – handsomely funded by Italian taxpayers – that goes hand in hand with multinational pharmaceutical companies.”

He added: “Let’s use those 100 million to support the sick in Italy and fund our hospitals and doctors!”
