President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Peter Navarro will serve as his Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing during his second term.
Navarro, a prominent economist and trade policy advisor, gained national attention during Trump’s first administration for his staunch advocacy of “Buy American, Hire American” policies.
He also faced legal controversy, including imprisonment on contempt of Congress charges for refusing to provide documents related to communications with Trump before and after the events of January 6.
In a statement, Trump praised Navarro’s effectiveness and dedication during his first term.
“I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it, will serve as my Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing,” Trump wrote.
“During my First Term, few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American. He helped me renegotiate unfair trade deals like NAFTA and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) and moved every one of my tariff and trade actions FAST.”
