Poles vote in tight presidential election with high stakes for E.U. -… – EVOL

SLUBICE, Poland — Polish voters cast their ballots for president Sunday in an extremely tight race that could deliver a victory for the nationalist right or steer the country toward greater European integration.

Three exit polls Sunday evening showed a race that was too close to call.

Two had liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski leading conservative nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki by a fraction of a percentage point, while the third put Nawrocki on top by a slightly larger amount, but still within the margin of error.

A win for Trzaskowski would bolster the pro-European agenda of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist government and stem the rapid emergence of the continent’s right wing.

A Nawrocki victory, in contrast, could endanger the future of Tusk’s ruling coalition and open a divide between Poland and its E.U. neighbors.

The election attracted widespread international attention as a clash of ideologies mirroring broader trends on the global stage — particularly as Europe deals with a growing rift with the United States under President Donald Trump.
