The House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to block a resolution to censure Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey, who faces federal charges over allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in May.
The motion to table passed 215–207, with five Republicans — Reps. Don Bacon, Mike Turner, David Valadao, Mike Flood, and David Joyce — siding with Democrats.
The measure, introduced by Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), would have removed McIver from her seat on the Homeland Security Committee.
Voting Dispute
Rep. Mike Turner’s office later said his vote was a mistake. “Congressman Turner supports removing Rep. LaMonica McIver from the Homeland Security Committee. He intended to vote no to table and submitted a correction immediately,” his office stated.
Reps. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), chair of the Homeland Security Committee, and Nathanial Moran (R-TX) voted “present.”
GOP Frustration
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) blasted colleagues who joined Democrats in blocking the resolution.
“She’s on the HOMELAND SECURITY committee & indicted for ‘forcibly impeding law enforcement officers.’ NUTS!” Roy wrote on X.
