The political partnership between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk has reached a breaking point following a heated disagreement over federal spending legislation that has sent shockwaves through conservative circles.
The conflict emerged when Musk publicly criticized Trump’s spending bill, which the Tesla CEO viewed as contradictory to his cost-cutting efforts at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The billionaire’s opposition to what Trump called his “Big Beautiful Bill” marked a dramatic shift from their previously collaborative relationship.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has defended Musk’s position, arguing that the billionaire’s political involvement has cost him financially rather than benefited him.
“Elon was never in this for EV tax credits, his dance with politicians has cost him way more money than it ever made him,” Massie revealed to Fox News star Lisa Kennedy Montgomery.
Massie suggested that traditional politicians struggle to understand Musk’s motivations because they typically enter politics for personal gain.
“So many politicians get into politics for their own personal benefit, and I think that’s why they have a hard time imagining somebody like Elon judging a bill for what’s good for his wallet instead of what’s good for the country,” the congressman said.
