A woman armed with a long gun took her young child to Joel Osteen’s Houston-area mega-church on Sunday and opened fire — leading cops to shoot her dead and the child to suffer gunshot wounds.
One child was believed to be shot before cops engaged in the “possible shooter” at Osteen’s Lakewood Church shortly after 2:10 p.m. Central Time, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a post on X.
“Info remains preliminary, as things remain dynamic,” Gonzalez wrote. “It is believed that a possible shooter is down.”
A bullet struck a young child between the ages of 5 and 9, according to another X post by Constable Alan Rosen of Harris County Precinct 1.
The child’s condition was unclear Sunday afternoon.
Gonzalez’s deputies responded to the megachurch by the Southwest Freeway about 50 minutes before a Spanish-speaking service was going to kick off, according to ABC 13.
The church confirmed this, saying in its own social media post that there was an “active situation involving shots fired” at the facility.
