Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) went to the hospital and was treated for dehydration, his office said on Wednesday.
The announcement, which noted that Schumer had since returned to work on Capitol Hill, came as the greater Washington, D.C., area was in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures reaching the mid-90s.
“Leader Schumer was at the Senate gym this morning and got lightheaded. Out of an abundance of caution, he went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration and is now back at work in the Capitol,” a spokesperson for the New York Democrat said in a statement. “He wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat.”
NBC News reporter Frank Thorp V noted that Schumer, who is 74, had just attended a press conference in the U.S. Capitol but did not take any questions.
Schumer delivered some remarks at the event with the families of victims from Continental Flight 3407 and left the room right afterwards.
