Former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner’s 14-year-old son died of “asphyxiation” while on vacation with his family at a Costa Rican resort, according to a report.
Miller Gardner was staying at the upscale Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest resort in Pacific Coast tourist hotspot Manuel Antonio when he fell seriously ill along with several members of his family, local officials told Inside Edition.
Local investigators said the teen’s sudden death may have been the result of “possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food,” according to NBC News.
The preliminary cause of death has yet to be confirmed via autopsy and toxicology analysis, Juan Pablo Alvarado, an official with Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency, told the outlet.
Officials are currently working with the family to transfer Miller’s body back to the US.
The US State Department confirmed to The Post that Costa Rican authorities are actively investigating his death, and closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation.
“Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment at this time,” the department said.
